Climate Change’s Impact on the Ocean

Did you know that climate change is affecting the ocean? It causes serious damages such as temperature increase, sea level rise, and acidification. The oceans are becoming more acidic because they keep absorbing more CO2 from the atmosphere, and at the same time oxygen levels are decreasing. These factors damage the ocean health and marine species, for example the coral reefs. Coral reefs are where most aquatic species live, these are critical marine ecosystems, however they being threatened by a trifecta of acidification.

The oceans absorb 90% of the excess heat caused by climate change, and 23% of human-caused CO2 emissions. When seawater heats up or when glaciers melt, the sea levels increases. It’s bad if sea levels increase because it causes stress on coastal ecosystems that provide recreation, protection from storms, and habitat for fish and wildlife. So next time you go to the beach, don’t leave trash on the floor and think about what could happen.
